Un-dean-iable

Poking around Robert Christgau‘s site, I’m wondering how you get the title “dean of critics.” I don’t know how Christgau got it, but he clearly endorses it. I suppose if someone else gives it to you, that’s an honor. But if it’s something you give to yourself? Douchey.
