Assumptions are the new journalism

Still busy, nothing major, but I did want to give a shout-out to Dan Hsu for pointing out that, you know, it’d be nice if the rumor-peddling megablogs actually did a little research once in a while.

Please note they thank Dan for “clearing up the matter,” but outside of acknowledging it with a “mea culpa” headline, they do not actually apologize for making and publicizing the mistake in the first place. I suspect this is because there is no actual regret for the incredibly assumptive comments that Mike Fahey made. But that’s me assuming!

I would really like to see “journalists” act like journalists. When you fuck up, own up.

This is pretty brutal stuff, and considering the screens he nabbed it’d be hard to make any kind of judgment outside of “he’s a Ziff employee” in one fashion or another.

    Sloppy. Messy. Ick.

This is exactly the reason why I dislike online blogs and news sites. I just want a up to the minute news site with magazine quality writing and informed opinions. Is that really too much to ask for?
