Fast Times live in SF April 25

We have a lot of gigs coming up in the next six months, and you won’t be able to see most of them. They’re private shows or weddings or casino gigs out in the tribal-owned areas of California, and while you’re certainly invited, I doubt many of you will want to make the trek. But we do have a show coming up in about two weeks, on a Friday night in San Francisco. And if you click this, you’ll get a nice big PDF that you can print out and give to all your friends.

The easiest way to give you directions is “it’s literally across the street from the In & Out Burger up near Fisherman’s Wharf.” And there is a dress code which is, from my understanding, to discourage gangs.  Those vicious, elderly-tourist Fisherman’s Wharf gangs. But they will turn you away without a collared shirt — they did it to both band friends and family members.

Those of you of a geeky persuasion may check out the alternate poster, but don’t get your hopes up — it’s just a reference, not a promise of performing the song.

I don’t need them

But I am looking for an excuse.

Another baby leaves home

I don’t sell guitars often but I promised I would let this one go some months ago. I finally found the right buyer.

Kat got it for me as an anniversary present a few years ago, and once I got the T5, the purple ESP Eclipse Archtop went into the case and kinda never came out. I actually replaced two guitars with the T5, which was kind of the point. I’m allowed to trade up when it helps thin the herd.

The purple ESP went to a friend, Chris “Coffeehouse Girl” Mitra, who was looking for “that special something” on stage. I’m glad to say that this was it. He loves it as much as I do. It arrived in Minneapolis safe and sound.

It’s unfortunate that I have already blown a good chunk of the money on recording gear. It’s fortunate that the recording gear in question will be written off on next year’s taxes.

The darker side of everything

We’re breeding addicts!

Please, people, shut the fuck up.

Personally, I’m addicted to oxygen. I find that I simply can’t make it through the day without breathing in and out a few thousand times. And when I went to the doctor about it, they wouldn’t do a damn thing to stop it. Can’t they see that I simply cannot stop myself?

Now that April Fool’s Day is over…

…I thought our bit was mildly amusing. Not original, but well executed. Kat took the photo and Gary Cribb did the Photoshoppery.

Plugging the podcasts

Wanna write about video games for a living? Curious to know about how I do what I do, and how other people do it too? This roundtable discussion may or may not help, but I’m a guest on it, so for every person that listens to it, it’s like +2 Ego.

Plus, you know, there’s OXM’s podcast. What else are you going to listen to on your commute?

Anyway, I haven’t spoken to a lot of you in a while, so if you’re just curious to hear if I still sound like I did in high school…the answer is yes. I am still the audio equivalent of a 16-year-old girl.

Where were you…

…when I hit level 70 in World of Warcraft? I know where I was. I was here, hitting level 70 in World of Warcraft:

Okay, so it’s not on par with wherever you were when Kennedy was shot or terrorists attacked New York City — but I had to grab a screen for the momentous occasion anyway.

I needed to float a small loan so I could float around the levels and finally get my flying mount. I immediately did what I figure most people do — I flew as high as I could go. It’s a lot higher than this screen suggests.

I thought I would have a “well, that’s it” feeling about the game but now I feel like there’s so many more things I can do. I can join my guild on the battlegrounds. I can check out high-level gear and start chasing epic stuff. I can twink the living hell out of my level 41 mage and level 52 warrior. I might even go back and see what my Alliance characters look like after having been abandoned for, like, a year.

Until then, look, up in the sky! Rawr! I’m 70!

Trixie: Rated M

Is it me or does Trixie use taboo language in her role as Community Manager a lot more than most other Microsoft employees? Her Twitter over the last day or so has been full of…spice. Color me surprised.

I mean, I swear a lot too, but not on the job. We’ve even bleeped a few things on the podcast when they slip out. But maybe we can relax some of our language rules in the magazine — it’s not like we’re going to offend Microsoft, apparently.

Big Bang Theory

Anytime the mainstream media tries to personify the geek culture, my hackles go up. We all know Screech. We all know Screech is simultaneously too broad to be real and too real to be funny. So when The Big Bang Theory showed up this year, I’m like, okay, great, they ran out of fat wisecracking husbands and slim wisecracking blondes and pretty wisecracking 20-somethings. All that’s left are my people.

But I’ve gotten tricked into watching a few episodes and I have to say…it’s funny. They are not faking the geek; the comic references and sci-fi punchlines make it clear that they hired the real deal and they are making a play specifically for the kind of audience that does not watch the sitcoms listed above. It’s got the guy who played Sara Gilbert’s boyfriend on Roseanne in the lead, and I always liked him. And did I mention the theme music was written and performed by Barenaked Ladies?

I’d be offended if they got the geek stuff wrong (“Take us seriously!”) and I still get kind of offended when they get it right (“I’m being pandered to!”). But I guess I’ll take the latter over the former. Especially if it makes me giggle.

Schrodinger’s Island?

There are oodles of cool Lost theories, but few make this much sense.
